ARMS WIDE OPEN INITIATIVE
We have a diverse set of interests, but one thing the three of us have in common is a love of literature. Whether listening to our parents read or staying up late to finish the final chapter with a flashlight, books have really shaped our childhood. In searching for our own books, we noticed how cheap and accessible used books can be for some people. Families always have books to give away as kids get older and local libraries raise funds by selling used books at deep discounts. That said, these books rarely fall into the hands of the children who need them the most.
Meanwhile, we are going through an unprecedented period in history with regard to population displacement. The events in Syria and Ukraine have been major topics at our dinner table, but the truth is the last decade has produced conflicts, and consequently refugees, at a heartbreaking rate. While the U.S. is slowly rebuilding the number of refugees accepted into our country, so much more should be expected given our history. We have been advocates for refugees in the U.S. from a young age.
The Arms Wide Open Initiative is our attempt to solve this used book market inefficiency and simultaneously help young refugees as they begin new lives in the U.S. Books foster a love of language, create pathways to creativity, and frankly provide a wonderful distraction from difficult circumstances for young refugees. While we have collected and delivered thousands of books, we are committed to all projects that improve the educational opportunities for young refugees including school supply drives, tutoring services centered on reading, and advocating with local officials.
