New Neighbors Partnership: Welcome Event

I had the pleasure of helping to welcome newly settled refugees at an all-day event in Queens, New York. Leading up to the event, I collected over 100 like-new books for children ages 0-12, and at the event, I set up and ran the prize table. While I always love helping kids pick out new books, my favorite part of the event was talking with so many children from around the world (Ukraine, Colombia, El Salvador, and Afghanistan). Many of the kids are just learning English, so the books provided a nice conversation starter for a shy kid to open up and get excited. I made sure to bring many graphic novels, which were a hit for the kids just starting to learn English!
