Today, June 20th, is World Refugee Day, and there are more than 122 million people displaced from their homes worldwide. Sadly, this is the highest number in history. World Refugee Day is a day to celebrate the strength and courage of refugees, but it is also a day to consider our responsibility to help those in crisis. Under the Trump Administration, the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program (USRAP) was indefinitely suspended in January 2025. This action canceled the resettlement of thousands of already-vetted refugees who planned to come to the United States to escape violence and/or persecution in their home countries. As the Trump Administration continues to step up deportation efforts, refugees already resettled in the United States fear for the future. Outside of the impact on refugees in the United States, the Trump Administration's dismantling of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) has severely impacted thousands of humanitarian and development programs around the world. Refugees face violence, food shortages, and vulnerability to diseases. If we are to save lives, it is our duty to voice our concerns to our government representatives and demand that the United States returns to its historical role as a world leader in refugee aid.
